Principles of Pleasure
When you feeling low how the hell do you pick yourself back up and recenter your pleasure?
I’ve been thinking recently about what makes me happy. The things that make me feel good, or put me in the mood. (Not mutually exclusive.)
This is stuff we learn as we grow, but we only learn what these are if we are actually paying attention. And it’s often difficult to know what these are in the moment. This can look a lot of different ways. It’s exposing yourself to new ways of thinking and tapping into what you are curious about. It’s figuring out what your body needs, what kind of movement, what kind of therapy, and what kind of companionship. And having a game plan.
Personally, the need for these tools shows itself when I am feeling quite low. When I am feeling disconnected from my body. When I feel in disarray. Instead of choosing to feel like a victim, I search for answers. I don’t want to feel low, I don’t want to have a lack of desire. I don’t want to accept things that were happening to me. But instead, they were happening for me.
I tell myself, it’s okay to feel this way right now, but what can I do to fill up my pleasure cup? Sometimes it makes me feel better, and doesn’t it doesn’t. And that’s ok!
Every bad date, every heartbreak, every toxic boss, every friendship shift, every moment of loss. I hated the discomfort, so I looked for answers.
